The Algebra I Review course is designed to help students shore up key skills presented to them in their algebra one course they just completed so that they can be better prepared to succeed in their upcoming math class. Whether they are headed into an Algebra 2 course or Geometry course, this weeklong intensive online workshop will help them not only develop a keen awareness of which skills they have mastered and more practice, but it will also give them more confidence in facing the challenges presented to them in the fall.
The Algebra I prep workshop, on the other hand, is designed to help students shore up key skills presented to them in the Pre-Algebra course they just completed so that they can be better prepared to succeed in their upcoming Algebra I class.

The Algebra I Review course will cover topics such as solving and graphing linear equations, solving quadratic equations, solving linear systems of equations, and simplifying polynomial algebraic expressions using properties of exponents and the distributive property. A special emphasis will be placed on applying concepts to problem-solving scenarios so that students gain more comfort using algebra to interpret and solve a variety of word problems.
he Algebra I Prep workshop will preview essential concepts that are typically presented in the beginning months of an Algebra I course so that students can enter their Algebra I class with a more confident grasp of the initial material they will explore in the fall. We will address key pre-algebraic concepts such as intensive computation with negative numbers and fractions, underlying linear graphing concepts such as slope and the equations of lines, introductory algebra material involving the simplification of algebraic expressions, the solving of two-step linear equations, and the modeling of real-world scenarios with algebraic expressions.

All sessions will take place on the same recurring Zoom link each day from 6 pm - 8 pm. The two hour block will be split up into an hour long initial lesson, followed by a 5 minute screen break, followed by a second 55 minute block. Instruction will rotate between whole group discussions with the instructor, Andrew Callard. Students will be given opportunities to work individually and collaboratively in groups through the dynamic use of Zoom breakout rooms, and they will have multiple opportunities for 1-on-1 check-ins during the last 15 minutes of each daily session. All material will be presented on a Google Classroom page so that students can easily download and print the materials before each session.
-
Students will be given optional practice work at the end of each daily session to do outside of the workshop to consolidate their mastery of the skills they have covered during a given day. They will also be given their own self diagnostic exercise at the end of the week to evaluate their level of mastery of the key stills we’ve covered. This will allow them to see what skills might still need more strengthening following the workshop.
